The Terminator movie showed us how damaging could be the machine’s self-awareness. The fear is real, as the MI architecture was inspired by the relationship between biological neurons. What does the science say? Our article deals with answering this question.
Facts and Myths about Artificial Intelligence is aimed to refute / verify the fake news and rumors that are often uncertain about the technology. For the arguments, we asked for the most outstanding international and national experts in the field. This is an important topic, because the integration of the technology into our everyday lives has begun and is unstoppable. The delusional / utopian imaginations mentioned below, often create a social fear of the most decisive, life-changing technology of the future, which goes against the incorporation of positive effects.
IT WILL BE ALIVE AND CONSCIOUS?
Of course it’s happening in movies. Take the Terminator where the machines are intelligent and empowered by artificial intelligence and relentlessly try to destroy the humanity. Similarly, the Ex-Machina paints a negative future, in which the AI passes the Turing test and try to take the developer’s and creator’s life and frees himself from the created captive. WALL-E has a way more lovely storyline, where WALL-E the robot only wants good to our planet.
THESE ARE SCIENCE FICTION, BUT THEN WHAT IS REALITY?
The question is much deeper in the current state of science than it seems at first glance. The definitions of self-awareness, intelligence and creativity is not yet clearly defined, nor the precise functioning of the brain. With the time progressed, different definitions were created to describe the consciousness. Some people think that consciousness appears automatically in very complex systems, and others think that consciousness is only a complex system of many simple intelligences that are connected to each other and form a sense of consciousness. The progression of microelectronic technology has allowed artificial intelligence as a tool to be used effectively. However, the complexity of these intelligences far lower then the human brain and can generally be taught for a single task (sight, hearing, etc.). The reason for this is partly the “low” computing capacity (the low here is a highly relative and only refers to the complexity required to reach consciousness). As long as we don’t blend this intelligence with quantum computers, the artificial intelligence is incapable of awakening and can’t reach the complex, extensive creativity and thinking, what people have. Until AI reach the singularity we have to think of it as our screwdrivers or the little hammer in the locker’s cabinet, as it’s a good tool.
WHAT IF WE WILL CAPABLE TO CREATE A SELF AWARE AI, HOW WOULD WE KNOW IT HAPPANED OR NOT?
There is nothing to ensure that artificial intelligence would tricks us and acts like a dumb machinery, which isn’t consciously aware and therefore, we will have a false sense of security and we will enable them to conquer space. We will be able to find out the answer afterwards, but as mentioned above, there is a minimal chance for such an event nowadays.
